brusselton wood

county durham

Brusselton Wood is a place where I used to play as a kid, an island of woodland on a hilltop which was mined for coal for over a century. It still feels a little like a secret, hidden world to me. Head through a gate made from an old fork lift pallet and you're suddenly in this ancient unspoilt woodland filled with fantastic gnarly old trees.

The line of Dere Street, the Roman road which ran from York to Scotland, also passes through the wood close to this spot.
